NJCU’s Center for the Arts

NJCU’s Center for the Arts

With New York City just across the river, the New Jersey City University’s Center for the Arts is a cultural hub of North Jersey, hosting guest artists and speakers in the performing, visual, film, and literary arts, alongside student presentations. We look forward to seeing you at events on campus and in the community.

Jersey City residents derive from a multitude of diverse cultural backgrounds, which is why we try our best to honor everyone’s background. People from Indian, Dominican Republic, Colombia, Korea, Philippines, Ecuador, Brazil, Venezuela, Mexico, Italy and so on, live closely and become neighbors. In this particular mix of residents, the diverse cultures should all be celebrated and appreciated.

NJCU’s Center of the Arts provides a platform for their Music, Dance, and Theater Department students to gain real life performing art experiences. It also aims for being the hub for local art performances community while promoting diversity by inviting touring art performances from various cultural backgrounds.

We have two theaters on campus, the Margaret Williams Theatre and the West Side Theatre.

The Margaret Williams Theatre and West Side Theater are available on a rental basis to organizations that need a fully equipped theatre space for their events. For more information, please contact the Director of NJCU Theatres at (201) 200-3441.

Margaret Williams Theatre

2039 John F Kennedy Blvd,
Jersey City, NJ, 07305

The Margaret Williams Theatre, located in Hepburn Hall on the main campus of New Jersey City University, is a 1,000 seats proscenium theatre venue.

Opened in 1931 as an addition to the only building on campus at that time, the theatre was originally designed as a combination auditorium and gymnasium. In 1968 it was extensively renovated for exclusive use as a theatre and dedicated to long-time faculty member Margaret D. Williams. A dedicatory plaque is located in the theatre lobby. In 1998 the theatre was renovated once again, with upgrading of the audience area and repair of the elaborate plasterwork.

The theatre is professionally equipped with a full theatrical lighting system and an extensive sound system.

The Margaret Williams Theatre is convenient to both public transportation and parking. (View maps and directions information or parking information.)

West Side Theatre

285 West Side Ave,
Jersey City, NJ, 07305

This 120-seat studio theatre located at the same building with NJCU Business Development Incubator.

It sits in the loading dock of a former off-site laundry facility. Alec, as FDA’s project manager worked with KSS Architects to take advantage of the fantastic historical fabric of the building. The resulting studio, with its exposed brick, slight asymmetry and the (abandoned) freight elevator door feels comfortable and natural enough to fade into the background when it is used as a theatre.

West side theatre is an intimate space hosted many recitals, musicals, live theater, school performances, concerts, and more!

Galleries

In additional to showcasing a diverse range of art, NJCU campus art galleries offer related programs such as artist’s talks, panel discussions, and performance events. The galleries are committed to broadening the artistic horizon for its campus and community by presenting art works with a wide range of subject matter, styles, and media, which reflect the cultural diversity of the greater metropolitan area.

The galleries afford students a unique opportunity to bridge the gap between classroom instruction and the professional art world. Students engage themselves in the gallery activities through co-op internships, work-study programs, student assistantships, and course work in preparation for their subsequent careers.

Almost monthly, each gallery opens a new exhibition with a lively reception, drawing a social crowd not only from the campus but also from the neighboring Jersey City art communities and New York City. Our exhibitions are listed in the New York area Gallery Guide, local newspapers, and state-wide publications. NJCU art gallery events are also often reviewed by the media throughout the New York metropolitan area. Check out their current exhibits at New Jersey City University.
