Ellis Island Interviews: In Their Own Words

The stories in this book are the firsthand accounts of the last surviving original immigrants who came to America through Ellis Island’s mythical Golden Door. The immigrants describe in detail the life they left behind – why they emigrated, what they endured in coming here, and what became of them after their arrival in the New World. This book is a testament to their courage and conviction, a final opportunity to capture on record a crucial piece of America’s past before it is lost forever.

Peter Morton Coan is the bestselling author of Ellis Island Interviews: In Their Own Words —the definitive work about Ellis Island and the immigrants who passed through it. He also wrote the critically acclaimed Toward A Better Life, which continues the immigration story with interviews of new immigrants to America from Ellis Island’s closing in 1955 to the present.

Mr. Coan is also the author of the award-winning Taxi: The Harry Chapin Story, the generational novel, The Last Baby Boomer and Finding Martha, his own story of adoption and Christian faith. The third book in his Christian testimony trilogy, Like Water Over Stone, will be released in 2024His work has appeared in Time, The New York Times, Travel & Leisure and many other publications. He was the Executive Editor of World Tennis magazine and Boating Industry magazine, and for many years was a successful financial writer for major corporations on Wall Street. He lives in New York and South Carolina. He has two daughters.
