Guttenberg Arts presents Cadence of Light

July 1, 2023 @ 7:00 pm - August 27, 2023 @ 7:00 pm

Guttenberg Arts Gallery is pleased to present CANDENCE of LIGHT a new exhibition by Sunil Garg featuring work that explores CADENCE and LIGHT. CADENCE is rudimentarily associated with rhythm in music, in walking, in dancing, in speaking, in eating, and, even in business cycles, etc. We don’t often consciously think about LIGHT as having CADENCE, although it not only does but that CADENCE is very influential and essential for life, health and moods. There is CADENCE in LIGHT such as the light and dark cycle of our day. Color, hue and tempo are significant to viewers at subconscious levels. LIGHT is the primordial element in our lives and its CADENCE influences our “biological clock.” On view from Saturday July 1st — August 27th, 2023 at the Guttenberg Arts Gallery with an opening reception on Saturday, July 1st, 7pm – 9pm. Guttenberg Arts Gallery is open by appointment only Tuesday – Sunday, 10am – 4pm and anytime, virtually on our website. Patrons can schedule their visit or view the virtual gallery by going to www.guttenbergarts.org/exhibitions.

Sunil Garg’s work involves CADENCE in physical movement and in the slowly varying colors and intensities of LIGHT (natural light is constantly changing) influenced by the ritual, innocence and simplicity of folk art and tradition, updated with technology.

Sunil Garg explains, “I did not make a conscious effort to develop a style; I let it happen to me. I grew up without manufactured LIGHT on a farm in India. We lived with the natural LIGHT we had. I strive to create work that interrogates those early experiences, is at the edge of familiarity, and that simulates going from unaware to aware states. LIGHT is a natural and democratic medium that lets me do this. Metaphors linking LIGHT to knowledge, awareness, abound: “enlightenment”, “bright ideas”, “flashes of genius”. In Hindu philosophy lack of LIGHT is a metaphor for avidya, lack of knowledge both spiritual and intellectual, that a gu (darkness) ru (dispeller of) can dispel. LIGHT is the quintessential ‘guru’!”

“Though we take it for granted, LIGHT is a uniquely paradoxical medium – being simultaneously particulate and wave-like. And although we can’t see LIGHT, we also can’t see without LIGHT. I want to entice viewers to slow down and see and contemplate LIGHT in, and CADENCE of, their lives. I want everyone to “eat light, drink it through our skins” since “with a little more exposure to light, you feel part of things physically.” (James Turrell). I agree.”
