Good for people
We believe in great design, from around the corner to around the globe. That means supporting the people behind your products with ethical production, worker well-being and economic impact. 95% of our products are designed in-house. We champion the maker movement in your own backyard to help strengthen local economies and boost burgeoning artists and designers, especially in underrepresented areas. We collaborate with artisan collectives around the world to help preserve their handcraft traditions and create opportunities for sustainable employment, especially in rural areas. We were the first-ever home retailer to join Fair Trade USA, ensuring workers fair wages, healthy working conditions and community development.
Good for the planet
At West Elm, we’re in the business of home—and the planet is everyone’s home. We’re focused on expanding our use of low-impact materials, reducing waste and prioritizing circularity. 100% of our all-cotton bedding and bath towels are sustainably sourced, including organic. 2.3B liters of water were saved in 2019 by sourcing organic cotton. 550+ farmers were trained in more sustainable practices in 2020 through our partnership with the Better Cotton Initiative. We are the most sustainable home furnishings retailer—the only home retailer on Barron’s 100 Most Sustainable U.S. Companies list for the past four years. Actions speak louder than words. We look to leading authorities in sustainable sourcing, ethical design and responsible manufacturing and work to meet their standards. So, when we make a claim, you know we can back it up.
