The Hoboken Islands Association is a group of dedicated gardeners and neighbors who collaborate to bring an ever-changing display of beauty to the 11th Street medians, from Washington Street to Park Avenue. Volunteer gardeners have designed and cultivated a patchwork of plots and paths since 1999, with the help of neighbors on spring clean and fall bulb planting days. Depending on the season you will see an impressive variety of flowers. An area dedicated to native plant species was begun in 2023 to encourage pollinating bees and butterflies.
Of note is the marker honoring Hoboken’s historic 1846 baseball game, which anchors the east end of the islands on Washington Street. There is also a children’s area on the Park/Garden median which is enthusiastically cared for by younger gardeners. The 11th Street islands are an urban oasis that provide residents and visitors an opportunity to literally smell the roses as they pass by.
